Oral Cancer Recurrence & Follow-Up Care

Cancer survivors live with the constant fear of cancer recurrence.
Now you can relieve your patient fear and minimize the risk of cancer coming back with routine VELscan and DNA Ploidy test follow-up.

What is oral cancer recurrence?

Despite the best efforts, more than 1 in 3 oral cancer patients experience cancer recurrence after conventional treatment. Cancer can come back when a few cancer cells are left in the body after treatment. Over time, they can grow into a tumor. That’s called cancer recurrence.

  • Not uniformed cancer extension makes it difficult to determine surgical margins. Research has proved that oral cancer extension is not uniform around the cancerous area, so a uniform margin around the tumor site may not always work causing not complete removal and cancerous cells, so cancer recurs.

  • Intraoperative Frozen Section
is a technique used to check whether margins are positive or negative during a surgery. If pathological analysis comes positive for margin, the surgeon needs to come back to OT and remove more tissue around the tumor. However intraoperative FS is based on a morphological examination when a pathologist analyzes samples collected from a few points of removed tumor. This technique has many limitations and errors.

Manage the risk after oral cancer treatment

When patients undergo VELscope Guided Surgery of oral cancer, their recurrence risk is already reduced up to 90% compared with conventional surgery. That’s great news, but not a reason to lower the guard. Mouth cancer survivors are at the greater life-long risk of cancer recurrence or developing secondary cancer, therefore routine follow-up is crucial to look for signs of cancer return.
Provide routine VELscan & DNA Ploidy test for your patients to minimize the risk of cancer coming back.

VELscan & DNA Ploidy Test Follow-Up

Routine follow-up with VELscan and DNA ploidy test is the most effective way to minimize the risk of cancer recurrence after treatment, because it allows to monitor and detect early molecular changes within the cells, that are not visible to a naked eye during clinical examination in a white light. When these abnormal changes are detected early, non-invasive treatment may help to stop cancer progression.

Case: Image A represents white-light image of a well-healed scar on the left lateral tongue. Image B represents the anterior aspect of this scar under fluorescent visualization showing a dark brown region of loss of fluorescence. Image C is the follow up after 12 months and the same area showed a persistent loss of fluorescence of increased size. DNA Ploidy test confirms that abnormal molecular changes within cells are happening suggesting high risk of recurrence. Twenty months after surgery a carcinoma in situ was diagnosed.

5 Reasons To Provide Patient Follow-Up

1. Powerful combination to fight oral cancer

AI-powered DNA Ploidy test together with the VELscope Vx system is an extremely powerful combination fighting oral cancer and monitoring for signs of recurrence. VELscope enhances visualization and helps to detect oral abnormalities early, while the AI-powered DNA Ploidy test gives valuable information about biological cell behavior and early molecular changes.

2. Painless follow-up

Painful procedures cause anxiety for patients and often is the reason to skip or delay follow-up. VELscan and DNA Ploidy test is absolutely painless and well accepted by patients.

Follow-up with VELscan & DNA Ploidy test is painless, there is no bleeding, and does not require anesthesia.

3. Evidence based technology

VELscope Vx comes with iPod attachment which enables photo documentation. Photo documentation allows doctors to keep a record of every examination and monitor the changes in the treatment site. Furthermore, it provides evidence-based care and eases communication with a patient.

4. Build trust for life

Trust and long-lasting commitment between a doctor and a patient is rare, but increasingly valuable asset today. Patients appreciate doctors who genuinely care for their well-being not only during a treatment but also after. Therefore providing patients with advanced follow-up solution to minimize the risk of mouth cancer recurrence and removing their fear helps to build and maintain trust, as well as life-long loyalty from patients.

5. Protect your reputation

A damaged reputation can hurt or even destroy the lifelong career of healthcare professionals. Nobody can give a guarantee to a patient that cancer treatment will be successful and cancer will not come back. Unfortunately, when cancer reoccurs doctors are the first to be blamed by patients and their families.

VELscan Guided Surgery of oral cancer reduces the risk of recurrence up to 90%. Advanced and evidence-based follow-up with VELscan & DNA Ploidy test helps to manage the risk even further. Thus your reputation will be protected and you will be sure that you did all you can to provide the best care for your patient.
